What they did

Researchers evaluated 36 young adults divided into four groups based on their lifetime hours of music practice: high, intermediate, low, or no practice. The participants completed a Simon task and a Stroop task while researchers recorded brain activity using 72 electrodes. The experiment analyzed reaction times, error rates, and brain signals associated with processing conflict and detecting mistakes.

What they found

Participants with more musical experience showed faster overall reaction times, with the group average dropping from 396 milliseconds for non-musicians to 347 milliseconds for highly practiced amateurs. EEG data showed that more practice was linked to larger brain waves associated with conflict detection and error monitoring. Interestingly, instead of overreacting to mistakes, experienced musicians showed less behavioral slowdown, with post-error slowing in the Stroop task decreasing for those with higher skill.

The limits

What it doesn't show

Because this study used a cross-sectional design comparing pre-existing groups, it cannot prove that musical practice directly caused the improvements in cognitive control. It is possible that individuals with naturally superior cognitive abilities are more likely to pick up and stick with an instrument. Additionally, the study was conducted on a highly specific sample of university students and employees, meaning these results might not generalize to the broader public or older age groups.
