What they did

In the first study, researchers analyzed clinical data from a public dataset of school-aged children, comparing 110 children diagnosed with dyslexia against 105 matched controls on phonological skills. In the second study, they tested 106 school-aged children in their lab on a visual motion discrimination task where participants had to decide if random dots were moving left or right. They used a mathematical model called the drift diffusion model to separate visual sensory processing from non-sensory decision-making parameters.

What they found

Phonological tests alone correctly classified only 67.4% of children with dyslexia or typical reading skills. In the visual task, children with dyslexia had lower sensory drift rates and a greater tendency to make fast errors. Combining visual and decision-making parameters with traditional language tests revealed that four distinct factors best explain reading ability. This four-factor model explained 63.9% of the variation in reading skill, compared to only 27.4% explained by a single-factor language model.

The limits

What it doesn't show

Because this study is correlational, it cannot prove that visual sensory or decision-making deficits directly cause reading difficulties. The findings do not reveal whether improving a child's visual motion processing through training would actually help them learn to read. Additionally, the results are limited to the specific tasks used and do not account for other potential risk factors, such as vocabulary and oral language skills, which were not explored in this study.
