Comparing and validating methods of reading instruction using behavioural and neural findings in an artificial orthography
What they did
Researchers trained 24 English-speaking adults to read a pair of artificial languages, each featuring 24 unique words written in unfamiliar symbols. One language was taught with a primary focus on connecting print to sound, whereas the other focused heavily on linking print to meaning. Over eight consecutive days of training, participants practiced both tasks but spent three times as much time on their assigned focus, followed by functional brain scans to measure neural activity during reading.
What they found
By the end of training, participants successfully learned both systems, reaching over 90% accuracy on reading aloud and comprehension tasks. Focusing on print-to-sound translation improved reading aloud speed for both familiar and new words. In contrast, focusing on print-to-meaning translation enhanced semantic comprehension speed and boosted the activation of brain networks associated with memory and meaning.
The limits

This study was conducted with 24 healthy adults who already knew how to read, meaning the findings may not fully apply to children who are learning to read for the very first time. Additionally, because the artificial orthography was completely regular, the experiment does not reveal how teaching methods affect learning in languages with highly irregular spelling systems like English. Finally, while brain imaging showed distinct activation patterns, it cannot prove that these specific neural shifts are mandatory for achieving long-term reading fluency.
