What they did

The researchers compared 176 children aged 6 to 7 years old divided into four groups of 44: monolingual Dutch, Frisian-Dutch, Limburgish-Dutch, and Polish-Dutch. The children completed standardized tasks measuring verbal and visuospatial working memory, selective attention, and interference suppression. The groups were carefully matched on age, non-verbal intelligence, socioeconomic status, and gender to prevent confounding variables.

What they found

Bilingual children overall outperformed monolinguals on the selective attention task, an effect primarily driven by Frisian-Dutch and highly proficient Polish-Dutch children. However, no bilingual advantages were found in the working memory or interference suppression tasks. Additionally, the researchers observed that 25% of the flanker data showed a negative flanker effect, which was significantly more common among monolinguals than bilinguals.

The limits

What it doesn't show

This study cannot establish a direct causal link between bilingualism and attentional advantages because of its cross-sectional design. It does not prove that all bilingual children have superior cognitive abilities, as the advantages were task-specific and absent in working memory and standard inhibition tests. Additionally, the results are limited to the specific regional and migrant languages studied in the Netherlands and may not generalize to other linguistic pairings or older age groups.
