How depression and anxiety change emotional brain control

What they did

The researchers scanned the brains of 30 individuals with major depressive disorder, 26 with generalized anxiety disorder, and 34 healthy controls using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Participants performed a linguistic go/no-go task where they had to press a button for words in standard font but withhold their response for words in italicized font. The task tested inhibitory control across different emotional settings by presenting words with positive, negative, or neutral meanings.

What they found

Individuals with major depressive disorder made more errors overall on the task compared to both healthy controls and those with generalized anxiety disorder. During negative emotional tasks, the depressed group showed significantly lower activation in a widespread brain network including the postcentral gyrus and mid-cingulate cortex. In contrast, patients with generalized anxiety disorder showed normal behavioral performance and increased recruitment of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex compared to the depressed group.

The limits

What it doesn't show

Although the study controlled for medication, the sample size was moderate, which prevented the researchers from exploring potential differences between male and female participants. Additionally, some participants in each patient group met the criteria for a secondary diagnosis of the other disorder, meaning comorbidities could have influenced the neural patterns. Finally, because the study used a block design, the researchers could not separate brain activity for individual trials from the overall emotional context of the blocks.
