Ethnoracial disparities in cognition are associated with multiple socioeconomic status-stress pathways
What they did
Researchers analyzed existing health and cognitive data from 970 young adults in Missouri. They measured participants' perceived stress using a 10-item questionnaire, and calculated socioeconomic status based on education and household income. Participants also completed several cognitive tasks on an iPad or in an fMRI scanner to assess processing speed, memory, and executive function.
What they found
Black and Hispanic participants reported higher stress levels than White participants, while Black participants had lower average socioeconomic status (SES). Parallel and sequential mediation analyses showed that for Black participants, lower SES was linked to higher chronic stress, which in turn predicted lower performance on memory and executive function tasks. For Hispanic participants, stress directly mediated cognitive performance, but SES did not play a significant role. On a working memory task, higher SES acted as a buffer, protecting both Black and Hispanic participants from stress-related cognitive drops.
The limits
What it doesn't show
The study is cross-sectional, meaning it cannot prove that low SES and stress actually cause cognitive differences over time. The sample was not nationally representative, as all participants lived in Missouri, which limits generalizability. Additionally, the researchers grouped Black and Hispanic participants into broad categories, ignoring cultural and regional diversity within these groups. Finally, stress and SES did not fully explain the cognitive differences, meaning other unmeasured systemic factors likely play a role.
