How does executive function relate to early reading in Brazil?

Children rated as poor readers by their teachers show specific difficulties in working memory and mental flexibility, rather than in attention or impulse control.

What they did

Researchers selected 53 children classified as poor readers by their teachers and matched them with 53 good readers from typical classrooms in Brazil. The children completed 12 tasks assessing working memory, cognitive flexibility, inhibition, and selective attention. The researchers then analyzed which cognitive components distinguished the two reading groups.

What they found

The results showed that only the combined working memory and cognitive flexibility factor significantly distinguished the two groups. Good readers scored higher on this factor than poor readers, whereas the groups performed similarly on measures of selective attention, response inhibition, and interference suppression. This cognitive factor successfully categorized 61.3% of the students into their correct reading groups.

The limits

What it doesn't show

The study relied entirely on subjective teacher ratings of reading performance rather than standardized tests, which may introduce classroom bias. Additionally, because the study is cross-sectional, it cannot prove that working memory deficits cause reading struggles. Finally, the findings may not apply to clinical populations, as children with diagnosed learning disorders were excluded from the study.

Key terms

Executive Functioning
A set of top-down mental processes that enable goal-directed behavior, planning, focus, and cognitive control.
Working Memory
A cognitive system responsible for temporarily holding and manipulating information in mind.
Cognitive Flexibility
The ability to switch between different rules, tasks, or mental mindsets in response to changing demands.
Inhibitory Control
The cognitive process of suppressing distracting stimuli or overriding prepotent, automatic behavioral responses.
Selective Attention
The capacity to focus on specific relevant information while filtering out irrelevant background distractors.

Which three cognitive processes are widely regarded as the core components of executive functioning?

Common questions

Why did the researchers use teacher ratings instead of standardized tests?

Teacher ratings are highly consequential in Brazil because they determine which students must repeat a school year, a common and expensive practice in the educational system.

Did the poor readers struggle with other subjects besides reading?

Yes, many poor readers also had low teacher ratings in writing, mathematics, oral language, and science, suggesting working memory acts as a general bottleneck for learning.

Why did cognitive flexibility and working memory group into a single factor?

In young children, cognitive flexibility is often less distinct from working memory than it is in adults, meaning children heavily rely on working memory to keep new sorting rules in mind.
