Key findings

The results showed that only the combined working memory and cognitive flexibility factor significantly distinguished the two groups. Good readers scored higher on this factor than poor readers, whereas the groups performed similarly on measures of selective attention, response inhibition, and interference suppression. This cognitive factor successfully categorized 61.3% of the students into their correct reading groups.

Methodology

Researchers selected 53 children classified as poor readers by their teachers and matched them with 53 good readers from typical classrooms in Brazil. The children completed 12 tasks assessing working memory, cognitive flexibility, inhibition, and selective attention. The researchers then analyzed which cognitive components distinguished the two reading groups.

Limitations

The study relied entirely on subjective teacher ratings of reading performance rather than standardized tests, which may introduce classroom bias. Additionally, because the study is cross-sectional, it cannot prove that working memory deficits cause reading struggles. Finally, the findings may not apply to clinical populations, as children with diagnosed learning disorders were excluded from the study.
