What they did

In May 2020, researchers ran a cross-sectional survey of undergraduate and postgraduate students across Saudi universities about emergency remote e-learning. They examined online learning self-efficacy (OLSE) domains—learning, time management, and technology—in relation to satisfaction.

What they found

OLSE domains played salient roles in satisfaction. About half of respondents were below the median satisfaction score (median 69). Authors argue students’ judgment of ability to complete online courses is critical for successful remote approaches.

The limits

What it doesn't show

Correlational cross-sectional data cannot prove that raising self-efficacy causes higher satisfaction, and emergency COVID conditions may differ from carefully designed online programs.

Key terms

Online learning self-efficacy (OLSE)
Belief in one’s ability to succeed at learning, time management, and technology use online.
Emergency remote learning
A rapid shift to online delivery during crisis, often without full instructional redesign.
Learning satisfaction
How content students feel with their e-learning experience.
Time-management self-efficacy
Confidence in organizing and pacing one’s study time online.
Technology self-efficacy
Confidence in using the digital tools required for online study.
