What they did
Researchers sampled hydrography, oxygen isotopes, macronutrients, silicon isotopes, and chlorophyll around icebergs A-76A and A-23A, then compared those measurements with satellite chlorophyll and each iceberg's drift history.
What they found
Mean shipboard chlorophyll was 8.5 times higher around A-76A (3.32 mg m−3) than around A-23A (0.39 mg m−3). Meteoric freshwater around A-76A reached 3.94%, above typical Southern Ocean background, while A-23A stayed near background. A-76A calved in 2021; A-23A had grounded for more than 30 years and lost about 25% of its area, likely stripping sediment-borne micronutrients.
The limits
What it doesn't show
Sampling is a snapshot around two icebergs, so it cannot quantify Southern Ocean carbon export from all giant icebergs. Background ACC variability and satellite–in situ chlorophyll mismatches also limit how cleanly meltwater can be attributed as the sole bloom driver.
