What they did
The paper uses Darwin–Huxley letters (including the kangaroo-and-bear ad hominem) against the later textbook story that evolution made classification simply genealogical. It notes Linnaean taxonomy’s biblical origins and Haeckel/Huxley’s public ancestor–descendant reimagining.
What they found
The connection between evolution and classification is not straightforward. Huxley treated classification as independent of evolutionary mechanism. Darwin wrote Origin’s classification discussion with Huxley’s stubbornness in mind. The kangaroo/bear thought experiment was Darwin’s common-sense appeal.
