What they found
After the modern synthesis, Darwin was narrowed to selection-as-mechanism. Developmental/active Darwinisms read selection as effect. Darwin used Newton’s unexplained gravity and the undulatory theory of light as analogues: a grouping law need not state an observed cause. Struggle for existence, on this reading, is among the real causes; selection names their outcome.
