What they did
Researchers scanned 21 participants using fMRI during associative learning and memory retrieval tasks. On separate days, participants learned either unimodal pairs or crossmodal pairs. During learning, they rated how easily they formed mental associations, and during retrieval, they reported whether their successful memory was highly vivid or not.
What they found
In the angular gyrus, researchers extracted brain activity using a 6-mm-radius sphere around target coordinates. Participants found it easier to form associations in the unimodal task, which had a proportion of 0.69 easy ratings, compared to the crossmodal task, which had a proportion of 0.61 easy ratings. At retrieval, angular gyrus activity scaled with subjective memory vividness regardless of modality, whereas during encoding, the region showed increased activity for successfully remembered crossmodal pairs compared to unimodal pairs.
The limits

The study sample was highly unbalanced, with 18 of the 21 analyzed participants being female, which limits the generalization of the findings to males. Furthermore, because the crossmodal task combined only visual and auditory stimuli, the results may not apply to other sensory combinations like touch or smell. Lastly, the correlational nature of fMRI scanning prevents the researchers from determining whether the angular gyrus is causally necessary for these processes.
