Neural correlates of opposing effects of emotional distraction on working memory and episodic memory: an event-related FMRI investigation
What they did
Seventeen young healthy female participants completed a working memory task during fMRI scanning where they maintained images of faces while being exposed to negative or neutral picture distracters. One week later, they completed a surprise episodic memory test to see how well they remembered those distracting pictures. Researchers also measured participants' self-reported impulsivity and emotional sensitivity.
What they found
When emotional distracters impaired working memory but enhanced long-term memory, participants showed increased activity in the amygdala and hippocampus alongside decreased activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. In contrast, when participants successfully resisted distraction but still remembered the emotional picture later, they showed heightened activity in the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex. Additionally, individuals with higher attentional impulsivity showed greater amygdala activation and lower prefrontal cortex activation when distracted.

The study's sample was exceptionally small, containing only 17 participants, all of whom were young, right-handed females, meaning the findings may not generalize to men, left-handed individuals, or older adults. Because the data is correlational, the fMRI scans cannot establish a causal direction between brain activity patterns and memory performance. Furthermore, the subgroup division into those who were impaired by emotional distraction (10 participants) and those who were not (7 participants) relies on very small sub-samples, making these individual difference analyses highly provisional.
