PFAS in Veneto youth tracked with higher blood pressure

Open paper intelligence

In 16,224 Veneto adults aged 20–39 exposed via contaminated drinking water, higher serum PFOA, PFOS, and PFHxS associated with hypertension, with the signal concentrated in men.

Study at a glance

Design
Cohort — Veneto PFAS health-surveillance cohort linking serum PFAS to BP and hypertension
N
N=16224 · 16,224 adults aged 20–39 recruited; 15,786 in main analyses after exclusions
Population
Young adults in Veneto Region exposed via PFAS-contaminated drinking water
Outcome
Blood pressure and hypertension associated with serum PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS, and PFNA

Structured fields used in claim comparison tables when every cited study has a complete layer.

What they did

Authors used a community health-surveillance cohort after decades of PFAS in drinking water, measured serum PFAS, SBP/DBP, and hypertension, and ran confounder-adjusted models plus sex-stratified analyses.

What they found

Hypertension ORs were 1.06 (PFOA), 1.12 (PFOS), and 1.08 (PFHxS). Sex interaction was significant; in men PFNA OR was 1.19. Absolute BP shifts were small.

The limits

What it doesn't show

Cross-sectional data cannot prove PFAS caused hypertension, and the community is unusually highly exposed, so results may not match background-level populations.

Key terms

PFAS
Persistent per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, here dominated by PFOA in contaminated tap water.
Veneto contamination
Decades of industrial PFAS in drinking water in Italy’s Veneto Region, ending around autumn 2013.
Hypertension
High blood pressure (≥140/90 mmHg or diagnosis/treatment) raising cardiovascular risk.
PFOA/PFOS
Long-chain PFAS historically used in manufacturing; PFOA was the main water contaminant here.
Sex-stratified association
Effect estimated separately in men and women after a significant interaction.

Common questions

How many young adults?

16,224 aged 20–39.

Exposure route?

Drinking water, especially PFOA, until autumn 2013.

Hypertension ORs?

About 1.06–1.12 per modeled increment for PFOA/PFOS/PFHxS.

Who drove the hypertension signal?

Men; PFNA OR 1.19 in men.
