What they did

The researchers scanned 18 young adults and 16 older adults using functional magnetic resonance imaging while they viewed emotional images. Participants looked at 180 pictures which were neutral and negative, with the negative pictures varying across low, medium, and high levels of emotional intensity. While inside the scanner, participants rated how negative each picture made them feel on an 8-point scale.

What they found

Both young and older participants showed similar activation in the amygdala, a deep-brain emotional hub, when viewing highly intense negative images. However, when viewing low-intensity negative images, older adults showed decreased amygdala activity alongside increased activity in the anterior cingulate cortex, a region involved in control. Additionally, higher activity in this control region was strongly linked to older adults rating these low-intensity negative images as less negative (with a correlation of -0.72).

The limits

What it doesn't show

This study relied on a relatively small sample of 18 young and 16 older adults, which may limit the generalizability of the findings and the reliability of brain-behavior correlations. Because the researchers only tested negative images, the results cannot tell us if similar brain patterns occur when older adults process positive emotions of different intensities. Furthermore, the cross-sectional design compares different age groups at one point in time rather than tracking how emotional processing changes within individuals as they grow older.
