What they did

Randomized 30 people with COPD to SMART-COPD (n=19) or control (n=11), used the app and Fitbit through pulmonary rehabilitation and 8 weeks of maintenance, and collected questionnaires, activity data, and interviews.

What they found

14/30 (47%) withdrew; completers had better baseline health and more prior digital experience. Completers were generally positive and some felt activity goals were easier. Activity tracking and self-report were problematic outcomes; simplicity beat personalization.

The limits

This feasibility sample cannot prove SMART-COPD improves COPD outcomes; high dropout and messy activity measures block a simple effectiveness claim.
