Can a single session of cycling reduce heroin cravings?

A single session of high-intensity cycling reduces self-reported cravings and improves brain indicators of self-control in men recovering from heroin addiction.

Key findings

The exercise group reported significantly lower cravings during physical activity compared to the control group, with this reduction persisting for forty minutes post-exercise. Electrophysiological data revealed that the exercising participants showed larger N2 wave amplitudes and increased theta band power in fronto-central brain regions, indicating enhanced cognitive control. These brain wave improvements directly correlated with the drop in self-reported cravings.

Methodology

Sixty male heroin addicts aged between twenty and forty years were randomly assigned to either an exercise or a reading control group. The exercise group performed a stationary cycling session with a five-minute warm-up, a twenty-minute main exercise period, and a five-minute cool down, while the control group read for thirty minutes. Before and after the sessions, researchers measured participants' self-reported cravings and tracked brain waves during a computer-based self-control task consisting of one hundred and fifty Go trials and fifty No-Go trials.

Limitations

This study only tested sixty male participants, meaning the findings cannot be generalized to female heroin addicts who may experience different craving and recovery dynamics. Additionally, the participants had already been drug-free for approximately one year in a compulsory facility, so these results might not apply to active users or those in early withdrawal stages. Finally, the design only tracked cravings for up to forty minutes after exercise, leaving it unclear how long the therapeutic benefits last.
