Researchers adapted and validated an English Treatment Burden Questionnaire for chronic illness across US/UK/Canada/Australia using PatientsLikeMe.
Key findings
TBQ showed a dominant first factor (87% variance), high item completion, and validity as a cross-condition treatment-burden measure—the first such English instrument in these countries.
Methodology
After pretesting and wording changes, 3,000 PatientsLikeMe members were invited; 610 completed the English TBQ; factor structure, construct validity, and reliability were assessed.
Limitations
Online chronic-illness volunteers may not represent all clinic populations, and burden scores are self-report.
