How does visual uncertainty affect our confidence in what we see?

When people fail to notice an object due to a temporary lapse in attention, they are better at evaluating their own mistake than when the object is physically blurred.

Key findings

Although overall detection performance was matched at approximately 70.00% correct on attentional blink trials and 69.28% correct on phase-scrambled trials, participants showed better metacognitive accuracy during attentional blink trials than during phase-scrambling trials. This difference was driven entirely by 'no' responses; they were much better at knowing when they missed an animal due to an attentional lapse than when they missed one because it was scrambled. Modeling showed that this pattern of results violates the equal-variance assumption of Signal Detection Theory, with attentional lapses and image degradation distorting signal and noise distributions in opposite directions.

Methodology

Researchers tested 35 undergraduate students using a fast-paced visual presentation where they had to detect whether animal images appeared. To make detection difficult, the researchers either presented the target shortly after a previous target (inducing an attentional blink) or physically degraded the target image through phase scrambling. Participants made detection decisions and rated their confidence on an 8-point scale.

Limitations

The study relies on a specific sequence of rapid visual presentations, which may not translate to how people evaluate their confidence in natural, slower-paced environments. Additionally, because the timing of the visual sequences differed between the experimental conditions by necessity, temporal differences rather than purely psychological mechanisms might have influenced the ratings. The study also could not directly control the difficulty of the attentional blink condition for individual participants using an active staircasing method, relying instead on adjusting the phase-scrambling difficulty to match it. Finally, the researchers acknowledge that constructing receiver-operating characteristic curves from confidence ratings can sometimes blend actual perceptual sensitivity with subjective metacognitive biases.
