Can paying attention bring back forgotten visual memories?

Directing attention to an item already stored in your short-term memory makes you more likely to remember it, but does not make your memory of it more precise.
Key findings
Valid cues significantly boosted recall accuracy compared to other conditions. This benefit was driven by an increase in the probability that participants could retrieve the item, rather than an increase in precision.
Methodology
In an initial experiment, researchers tested Twenty participants using memory arrays of four or eight arrows. In a subsequent experiment, another group of Twenty participants completed the task with arrays of four arrows.
Limitations
The study only tested samples of Twenty young adults per experiment, meaning these findings might not generalize to older adults or children. Additionally, the researchers used simple arrow orientations, so it remains unclear if attention can restore more complex visual features. Finally, the design cannot distinguish whether attention actually recovers fully forgotten items or simply stabilizes weak, unencoded traces.
