Does brain stimulation reliably improve memory and attention?

Weak electrical brain stimulation does not consistently alter memory or self-control, suggesting its effects depend heavily on task difficulty and participant engagement.
Key findings
The experiments showed that brain stimulation had no significant effect on performance. In the first study, visual memory capacity was not altered by stimulation. In the second study, neither response times nor accuracy on attention and memory tasks changed during stimulation.
Methodology
Researchers ran two experiments testing whether brain stimulation could modify cognitive performance. In the first study, 16 high-capacity and 17 low-capacity participants completed visual memory trials under active or inactive stimulation. In the second study, 36 participants with high or low self-reported ADHD symptoms completed attention, memory, and math tasks during active and inactive stimulation sessions.
Limitations
These results do not prove that brain stimulation is entirely ineffective, as the studies used self-reported symptom scales rather than clinical diagnoses. Additionally, because the tasks may have been too easy or the participants lacked motivation, the stimulation might have failed to show an effect due to ceiling levels of performance. Finally, the study was limited to a specific brain region and did not explore how individual differences in brain anatomy might affect current flow.
