Does mental flexibility help children learn to read?

Key findings

Reading-specific flexibility using written words predicted approximately 10% of the variance in reading comprehension, even after accounting for basic word reading and decoding skills. In contrast, domain-general flexibility using pictures did not explain any unique variance. Word-based flexibility also significantly predicted word recognition performance, explaining 5.7% of the variance at the final step.

Methodology

The researchers tested 60 second-grade French children on their reading comprehension, word recognition, and decoding skills. To measure cognitive flexibility, children sorted cards based on two rules at once—the starting sound and the meaning category of the item. This sorting test was completed using both written words for reading-specific flexibility and pictures for domain-general flexibility.

Limitations

Because the study used a correlational design, it cannot prove that cognitive flexibility directly causes better reading. The researchers only tested a sample of 60 second-grade children from middle-class backgrounds, so the findings might not apply to other socioeconomic groups or languages. Additionally, the study did not control for other executive functions like working memory, which could explain the connection.
