How do learning speed and reward sensitivity affect gambling tasks?

People who perform poorly on gambling tests often simply learn at a slower rate or struggle to notice differences in reward sizes rather than having a fundamental decision-making impairment.
Key findings
During the first trial block of the standard task, 30% of the participants performed poorly enough to be classified as impaired, but this dropped to 16% when given more time. Applying a strict stability measure revealed that 28% of individuals failed to establish clear deck preferences even after completing all rounds. Comparing subgroups in the second task showed that these 9 persistent poor performers had lower sensitivity to reward and penalty sizes, but not to how frequently these occurred, compared to 19 good performers.
Methodology
In the first experiment, 50 young adults completed a 200-trial version of a standard card-sorting decision task. In the second experiment, 30 of these participants completed a newly designed task featuring four conditions to measure their sensitivity to reward and punishment sizes and frequencies. The researchers used these tasks to evaluate individual learning speeds and to see if poor decision makers differed in how they perceived reward and penalty values across two decks.
Limitations
The study cannot prove that low sensitivity to reward and punishment sizes directly causes poor performance, as the link remains correlational. The findings are based on a small sample of young adults, meaning the behavior of older adults or clinical groups remains untested. Additionally, the second task is a brand-new experimental setup that requires further validation across different cohorts. Finally, the design cannot rule out whether some participants failed to form stable preferences due to fatigue or loss of interest during the long testing sessions.
