How do children with autism perceive action styles?

Children with autism struggle to recognize subtle and neutral action styles, requiring larger physical differences to distinguish between gentle and rude movements.

Key findings

While children with autism could identify extreme action styles like rude or gentle, they struggled to recognize neutral styles, often misclassifying them. They also had a significantly lower ability to detect subtle 100-millisecond differences between speeds, meaning they required much larger changes in movement speed to perceive a shift in style compared to typically developing children.

Methodology

The researchers compared how 15 children with autism spectrum disorder and 17 typically developing children, aged 8 to 12, perceived the style of an action. Participants watched short videos of actors moving objects at eight different speeds, ranging from 600 to 1300 milliseconds. After each video, the children immediately rated the movement's style on a five-point scale from 'very rude' to 'very gentle'.

Limitations

The study used video clips that removed facial expressions, voice tones, and body contact, so it does not show how children with autism perform when these additional social cues are present. Additionally, the videos only displayed actions from an observer's perspective, meaning the findings might not apply to self-focused viewpoints. The small sample size of 15 children with autism also limits how easily these findings can be generalized to the broader autistic population.
