Nitrogen cycle

Intermittent aeration and anammox nitrogen

Palomo A, Azevedo D, Touceda-Suárez M, et al. · Environmental microbiome · 2022

Open access · cc by · source: Europe PMC

Switching oxygen on and off kept anammox working while wiping out nitrite-oxidizing bacteria.

Key findings

TN removal stayed about 75–86%; NOB were essentially absent; AOB ~13% and anammox ~22% of the community; 79% of reads mapped to 55 MAGs.

Methodology

Operated a partial nitritation–anammox granule reactor with rising redox-switch frequency and recovered 55 MAGs from monthly metagenomes.

Limitations

Does not demonstrate the same NOB suppression in full-scale plants with real wastewater organics.
