Does learning to code help kids solve general problems?

Teaching primary school children to code using Scratch and Python significantly improves both their computational thinking and general logical problem-solving abilities.
Key findings
The coding group showed massive improvements, with their average computational thinking score rising from 20.4 to 30.6 and their problem-solving score increasing from 17.8 to 23.5. These gains represent very large effect sizes, whereas the control group experienced no meaningful changes. Furthermore, the cognitive benefits were consistent regardless of the child's gender or initial mathematical ability.
Methodology
Researchers conducted a 24-week study with 200 children aged 8 to 12, randomly assigning them to an experimental group of 100 or a control group of 100. The experimental group received 48 total hours of structured coding instruction using Scratch and Python, while the control group followed their standard school curriculum. Both groups completed paper-based tests before and after the intervention to measure computational thinking and general problem-solving skills.
Limitations
The study used a passive control group, meaning it cannot prove whether coding specifically caused these improvements or if any engaging extra-curricular activity would have had the same effect. It was also conducted in a single urban area, so the findings might not apply to rural or culturally diverse populations. Finally, because there was no long-term follow-up, the results do not show whether these cognitive benefits persist over multiple years.
