Can loading your vision stop your mind from wandering?

When a visual task demands a high level of perceptual focus, it naturally reduces the rate of task-unrelated thoughts.

Key findings

Under high perceptual load conditions, the frequency of task-unrelated thoughts fell significantly. For example, in the third experiment, the mind-wandering rate fell from 60.06% in low load to 44.87% in high load. Furthermore, the fourth experiment showed that individuals who experienced the largest reduction in distraction from external objects under high load also experienced the greatest reduction in internal mind-wandering.

Methodology

Across several experiments, researchers tested small groups of university volunteers, including groups of eighteen and twenty participants, on a visual search task. Perceptual load was manipulated by changing the search items from simple, uniform shapes to a complex set of letters, while participants periodically reported whether their minds were wandering.

Limitations

The study relies entirely on self-reports via thought probes, which cannot capture unconscious thought processes that might still occur under high load. Because the sample sizes were small, with only ten participants in the first experiment and twelve in the second, the statistical power may be limited. Additionally, while high perceptual load reduces mind-wandering, testing the impact of cognitive or working memory load remains highly challenging because working memory is directly required to generate thoughts in the first place.
