How different types of memory load affect visual distraction

While loading mental control processes makes us more easily distracted, loading visual memory actually helps us block out irrelevant sights.

Key findings

The studies showed that increasing visual memory load—whether during encoding or maintenance—significantly reduced distractor interference. Conversely, loading verbal working memory with letters increased distractor interference. A pooled analysis of 56 participants revealed a significant negative correlation of r = −.31 between visual memory capacity estimates and distraction response times.

Methodology

Researchers tested how different memory demands affect distraction using a visual search task combined with a working memory task. In Experiment 1a, seventeen participants saw a visual search display during the encoding of either one or four colored squares. Experiment 1b tested twenty-two participants using the same task but presented the visual search during the memory retention delay. Experiment 2 compared verbal memory load using letters with visual memory load using meaningless symbols.

Limitations

This study does not show how these visual memory load effects would apply to non-visual modalities like touch or hearing. The visual search task also specifically used a low perceptual load, meaning these findings might not apply to complex search environments where target stimuli are harder to find. Finally, several of the individual experiments relied on relatively small samples, such as only twelve participants in Experiment 2a.
