High levels of persistent tension and stress, rather than general anxiety, impair a person's ability to tell the difference between safe and dangerous situations when things are ambiguous.

Key findings
High scores on the tension-stress subscale of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales, but not trait anxiety, correlated with reduced discriminatory learning between ambiguous safe and dangerous cues. This deficit was primarily driven by highly stressed participants overestimating the threat of the ambiguous safe cue, rating it as more likely to lead to the loud scream. Furthermore, in the behavioral test, the group with high tension-stress scores chose the chocolate bar associated with the ambiguous safe cue significantly more often to avoid the ambiguous dangerous cue.
Methodology
The researchers recruited sixty-eight participants to evaluate how individual personality traits influence learning under ambiguous conditions. After excluding fourteen participants who did not learn the initial cues, the remaining participants completed a fear-conditioning task. They learned to associate computer-generated shapes with a loud scream under specific conditions (blocking and protection from overshadowing) that left some cues with ambiguous safety or danger values. Afterward, participants completed several psychological questionnaires and chose between chocolate bars to test for behavioral avoidance.
Limitations
Because the study relied on a correlational design, it cannot prove that high tension-stress causes deficits in learning or whether a third variable is responsible for both. Additionally, the sample consisted of young university students with a mean age of 22.00 years, which limits how well these findings apply to the general population or clinical populations. Finally, the researchers used a simple screen background switch for their environmental context, which may not have been noticeable enough to test if learning transfers across different settings.
