Key findings
In the walking experiment, low-intensity exercise lowered general anxiety over time but did not change immediate anxiety or negative cognitive biases. In the cycling experiment, moderate-intensity exercise significantly reduced immediate and general anxiety, perceived stress, and depressive symptoms. Additionally, those who cycled showed a significant reduction in overall negative interpretation biases after the session compared to the resting group.
Methodology
In the walking study, 24 university students either walked briskly for 30 minutes or rested. In the cycling study, 48 regular gym members either completed a 40-minute moderate-intensity stationary cycling workout or rested. Researchers measured anxiety, stress, depression, and negative mental interpretation biases before and after the activities.
Limitations
The findings cannot be directly generalized to individuals with diagnosed clinical anxiety or depressive disorders because the studies relied entirely on healthy, non-clinical cohorts. Furthermore, the small sample sizes limit the statistical power of the results. The research also relied on subjective self-report questionnaires to assess mood, which may introduce response bias, and did not track how long the psychological benefits lasted after the sessions.
