How Children Born Without a Corpus Callosum Read Minds

Children missing the main pathway connecting their brain hemispheres have difficulty understanding other people's complex emotions and thoughts, even though their basic reasoning skills remain intact.

Key findings

Children with AgCC performed significantly worse on both first-order and second-order false belief tasks, with only half of the AgCC children passing the first-order task compared to 89 percent of control children. While they could identify basic facial emotions fairly well, they struggled to recognize complex mental states, particularly when the task required decoding expressions around the eyes. Additionally, children with AgCC struggled with inhibitory control but showed typical working memory capacity, and their parents reported more frequent behavioral and social problems.

Methodology

Researchers compared 18 children aged 6 to 8 with isolated agenesis of the corpus callosum (AgCC) to 18 typically developing children matched for age, gender, and IQ. They tested participants on their ability to pass false belief tasks, recognize basic and complex emotions from facial photographs, and perform executive function tasks measuring working memory and inhibitory control. Additionally, parents completed questionnaires assessing their children's behavioral and social difficulties.

Limitations

The study's small sample of 18 children with AgCC limits the generalizability of the findings and makes it difficult to detect subtle correlations between cognitive and behavioral problems. Because the sample included two children with partial AgCC, the results cannot be strictly restricted to complete callosal absence. Furthermore, the correlational nature of the parent-reported behavioral data means we cannot conclude that callosal absence directly causes specific behavioral issues, as other brain adaptations or environmental factors may play a role.
