Flower-rich, mixed landscapes support more pollinators

Across 20 natural communities, wild pollinator abundance rose with local flower richness and landscape heterogeneity, linking land-use homogenization to weaker pollination networks.

Key findings

Mean wild pollinator richness was ~48 standardized species per site (40–88 raw). Abundance increased with flower richness and (marginally) landscape heterogeneity at 1 km. Networks and diets also shifted along those resource-diversity gradients.

Methodology

Authors surveyed 20 plant–pollinator communities along gradients of 1 km landscape heterogeneity and local flower richness, recording 9,635 visits and building networks of wild bees, flies, beetles, and other guilds (honeybees present but relatively scarce).

Limitations

Twenty sites in one region cannot prove a global pollinator collapse or a specific restoration recipe, and honeybee effects were limited by low hive abundance.
