What affects bonding and child attachment in at-risk families?

Children in families with both demographic and psychological risks have lower attachment security than those facing demographic risks alone.
Key findings
Having multiple risk factors had a worse cumulative impact than single risks; children whose families faced both social and psychological challenges had lower attachment security compared to those facing only social challenges. When risk levels were examined as continuous scales, lower family socioeconomic status and younger maternal age were tied to lower emotional availability from mothers, but maternal mental health issues surprisingly did not show a direct relationship with bonding quality. Single risk factors on their own did not show strong impacts when treated as simple binary categories.
Methodology
Researchers tracked forty first-time mothers and their children from Northern Italy who faced socio-demographic or psychological risks. The team collected risk data during pregnancy and early infancy, then assessed mother-child interaction quality at twelve months and child attachment security at eighteen months. Interaction quality was coded from play sessions for a subset of twenty-five dyads, while attachment was measured using home observations.
Limitations
This study relies on a small sample of forty families, which limits the ability to detect subtle effects or generalize the findings to larger populations. Because the data is correlational, we cannot conclude that risk factors directly cause lower interaction quality or weaker attachment security. Additionally, the emotional availability score was only measured in twenty-five of the participating families, and the study did not measure other potentially crucial variables like infant temperament or maternal attachment history.
