Over 12 weeks on Alzheimer’s Society’s Talking Point forum, caregiving relationship quality improved but anxiety and depression scores did not.

Study at a glance

Design
Other — Observational pre–post study of new Talking Point dementia-carer forum joiners (not randomised)
N
N=61 · 128 completed baseline; 61 provided 12-week outcomes (primary analytic sample)
Population
New informal dementia carers joining an internet support forum
Outcome
PHQ-9, GAD-7, and SQCRC change over 12 weeks

Structured fields used in claim comparison tables when every cited study has a complete layer.

Key findings

SQCRC relationship-quality scores changed over 12 weeks, but PHQ-9 and GAD-7 did not. Usage was often low (17/58 never visited). Among users, more time on the forum correlated with greater PHQ reduction. Most individuals showed no reliable symptom change.

Methodology

New informal dementia carers joining Talking Point completed PHQ-9, GAD-7, and SQCRC at baseline and 12 weeks, with self-reported forum use. Sixty-one provided 12-week outcomes; qualitative interviews explored user experience.

Limitations

No control group and low engagement limit inference that forums treat carer anxiety/depression. Completer analyses and self-selected new users may not represent all carers.

Role on claims

Each row is a claim on a concept or method page where this paper supports, challenges, or qualifies the statement. Roles are hand-checked — not a model guess.

  • SupportsTelemedicineconcept

Effect sizes and settings differ across telemedicine studies — digital vs clinic, trial vs observational — so results should not be pooled casually.

Evidence for the claim as stated.

  • PHQ-9 can stay flat. New dementia carers on Talking Point showed no PHQ-9 or GAD-7 change at 12 weeks (61 provided outcomes); 17 of 58 never visited the forum. Among users, more time correlated with greater PHQ reduction, but most individuals showed no reliable symptom change. No control group and low engagement limit any claim that forums treat carer depression.

Evidence for the claim as stated.

  • PHQ-9 and GAD-7 do not always move as a pair, and not every digital support changes either. IntelliCare coaching favoured GAD-7 more than PHQ-9; iCBT moved both (g=0.78 and 0.72); the carer forum moved neither overall. Using PHQ-9 as the sole outcome would have missed the factorial trial's clearest coaching signal.

Evidence for the claim as stated.
