Key findings

Thicker moss reduced ALT exponentially. Thicker OM also reduced ALT, interacting with slope. Tree LAI and moisture interactions mattered. Combined predictors explained 73% of ALT (pseudo R² = 0.734).

Methodology

Researchers measured ALT, moss/OM thickness, soil moisture, slope, and tree/understory LAI in burned and unburned black-spruce stands, then fit tobit regressions and SEM because some ALTs exceeded the 150 cm probe.

Limitations

Four sites in one region cannot map pan-Arctic carbon release; 150 cm censoring and a single season limit inference about long-term thaw trajectories.
