Concept
Emotion Regulation
Emotion regulation refers to the processes by which individuals influence which emotions they have, when they experience them, and how they express and manage these emotional states. It involves a mix of cognitive, behavioral, and physiological strategies that can be consciously or unconsciously deployed to navigate both positive and negative feelings.
Psychologists study emotion regulation because it is fundamental to mental health, academic performance, and social relationships. Deficits in emotion regulation are central to many neurodevelopmental and clinical conditions, while effective emotional management helps individuals buffer the harmful psychological impacts of daily life stress.
Evidence
What the evidence shows
Drawn from 4 studies in this library. Each claim links to the studies behind it.
Women report using a wider, more diverse, and more flexible repertoire of emotional coping strategies across different situations compared to men.
High emotion regulation ability serves as an effective buffer against the negative impacts of stress on subjective happiness and depression levels in men, but this buffering effect does not occur in women.
Children's everyday emotional expressions in preschool share a bidirectional relationship with their cognitive control, where early emotionality predicts future executive functioning and early self-regulation predicts future emotional expression.
Structured emotional training programs can improve facial expression recognition, anger management, and overall emotional control in children diagnosed with ADHD.
Common misconceptions
Because women often score higher on measures of overall emotion regulation ability, their emotional management skills are always more effective at protecting their mental well-being from stress than men's.
While women may score higher on tests of emotional management and possess a broader coping repertoire, research shows that high emotion regulation ability only buffers the negative relationship between stress and well-being (depression and happiness) in men.
A young child's emotional expression in the classroom is independent of their long-term cognitive development and executive functioning.
Emotionality and cognitive self-regulation are closely linked; a preschooler's emotional expressions in the fall significantly predict their teacher-rated executive functioning in the spring, and vice-versa.
Emotion regulation difficulties associated with neurodevelopmental disorders like ADHD are fixed biological traits that cannot be altered with training.
Structured emotion regulation training focusing on cognitive strategies and identifying primary emotions has been shown to successfully improve facial emotion recognition and parent-reported anger control in children with ADHD.
Exam-style questions
Short-answer questions that ask you to explain or compare, not recall.
Compare the gender differences observed in emotion regulation strategy selection with those observed in how these strategies buffer stress.
Research indicates that women demonstrate greater flexibility and use a wider variety of coping strategies (such as problem-solving and social support) across scenarios than men, whereas men are more likely to report using suppression and denial. However, despite women scoring higher overall on emotion regulation performance tests, high emotion regulation ability only buffers the link between stress and negative well-being (such as depression and low happiness) in men, suggesting that emotional management skills have different protective values for each gender.
Explain the relationship between executive function and emotionality in preschool-aged children, using longitudinal evidence to support your answer.
Executive function and emotionality are closely linked and influence each other over time. Longitudinal data from preschoolers shows that a child's observed emotional expression in the fall significantly predicts their teacher-rated executive functioning in the spring. Conversely, their observed self-regulation in the fall predicts their emotional expressions in the spring, confirming a bidirectional, transitive developmental relationship.
Evaluate the efficacy and limitations of structured emotion regulation training programs for children with ADHD.
Structured training programs focusing on cognitive management and emotional identification can significantly improve facial expression recognition and reduce parent-reported emotional outbursts and anger. However, limitations in this research include the lack of an active control group to rule out placebo or practice effects, a reliance on subjective parental ratings that may introduce bias, and a small, geographically restricted sample size.
What are the primary methodological limitations of using hypothetical written scenarios to assess real-world emotion regulation?
Hypothetical written scenarios cannot guarantee how participants will actually behave during real-world crises, as they measure expected choices rather than actual behavioral execution. Additionally, they do not measure whether the selected strategy is successful in reducing physiological or subjective distress in real-time.
The studies
- How do men and women differ in emotional regulation flexibility?
Women show greater flexibility and use a wider variety of emotional coping strategies across different situations compared to men.
- How Preschoolers' Emotions and Thinking Skills Are Linked
Children's everyday emotional expressions in preschool predict their future self-control and thinking skills months later, revealing a close relationship between emotion and cognition.
- How managing emotions helps men cope with stress
Being good at managing emotions helps men buffer the effects of stress on happiness and depression, but this buffering effect was not found in women.
- Can Emotion Training Help Kids with ADHD Manage Their Feelings?
Children with ADHD improved their ability to recognize facial expressions, and their parents observed fewer emotional outbursts and better anger control after a structured training program.
