Holistic Processing

Holistic processing refers to a cognitive mechanism where an object, most notably a human face, is perceived and processed as a single, integrated whole rather than as a collection of separate, individual features. Instead of analyzing eyes, nose, and mouth in isolation, the brain merges these features and their spatial relationships into a cohesive mental representation.

This mechanism is vital because it enables the rapid, nearly instantaneous recognition of familiar people and social cues necessary for successful daily interaction. Studying holistic processing helps researchers understand normal visual development, the impacts of real-world barriers like masks, and how developmental disorders alter social perception.
