Interoception

Interoception is the process by which the nervous system senses, interprets, and integrates internal signals from the body, such as heart rate, breathing, and hunger. It functions as an inner sensory map that allows individuals to perceive and monitor their internal physiological states. This sensory feedback plays a crucial role in maintaining homeostatic balance and shaping emotional experiences.

Psychologists study interoception because it forms the cognitive and physiological baseline for how humans experience, label, and regulate their emotions. Distortions or deficits in interoceptive processing are heavily linked to clinical conditions such as anxiety, somatoform disorders, and depression.
