Stress & Coping

Stress research studies the demands people experience and what they do with them. Almost everything in this cluster is measured by self-report questionnaire, which makes the few studies carrying an objective measure disproportionately informative.
Stress interventions are widely deployed in workplaces and services on evidence of this shape, so the gap between a lower questionnaire score and a lower stress burden is the whole practical question. These studies are useful for seeing exactly where that gap sits.

What we know
- Full mediation: in this sample stress did not reach performance except through mental health.
- A durable effect on the self-reported outcome, in an occupational group rarely studied.
- Sham-controlled and double-blind, which is what separates this from the open trials around it.
- An average effect on a stress scale would have represented neither group.
Largest unresolved question
Whether these interventions reduce stress or reduce reported stress is not resolved. The stimulation trial was double-blind and sham-controlled but relied on self-report questionnaires rather than cortisol or actigraphy, and the mindfulness study's participants were described as self-selected — so an expectancy account survives in both.
Common misconceptions
Reducing workplace stress will improve performance directly.
In this sample the direct path disappeared once mental health was modelled. Stress predicted performance only through mental health, so an intervention that lowered stress without moving mental health would not be expected to change performance.
A validated stress scale means the construct it measures can be improved by intervention.
The family caregivers' hardiness scale showed a five-factor structure with good fit and acceptable reliability. Validation establishes that the instrument measures something consistently; it says nothing about whether raising the score improves anything.

Drawn from 5 studies in this library. Mix labels say which citation roles are present; they are not a strength score. Supports means evidence for a finding; Challenges means evidence against a stated position; Qualifies marks scope.
Full mediation: in this sample stress did not reach performance except through mental health.
The path from work stress to performance ran entirely through mental health. Work stress negatively predicted performance (β = -0.193) and mental health (β = -0.517), and the stress-to-performance link became non-significant once mental health entered the model.
A durable effect on the self-reported outcome, in an occupational group rarely studied.
Mindfulness training reduced distress in police officers and the effect persisted. Psychological distress fell immediately after training (d = -0.45) and remained lower at three-month follow-up (d = -0.41), with subjective sleep quality also improving.
Sham-controlled and double-blind, which is what separates this from the open trials around it.
Two different stimulation targets both beat their shams. Multisession prefrontal tDCS and transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation each reduced stress and improved sleep quality against sham, with effects persisting at four weeks and tDCS showing the larger immediate effect on sleep quality (d = 0.80).
An average effect on a stress scale would have represented neither group.
The same stressful period produced opposite experiences in different families. Qualitative analysis of family life under pandemic restrictions yielded six themes in which loss and mental-health strain predominated, while some families reported strengthened bonds, new hobbies and gratitude.

Papers
5 studies in this library bear on Stress & Coping, ordered by citations.
- How did early COVID reshape Australian family life?
Among 2,130 parents, themes spanned emotional distress, lost healthy routines, intimacy push–pull, parenting overload, unequal burden—and some positivity.
- How do you measure hardiness in AD caregivers?
Among 435 Iranian AD family caregivers, the new FCHS showed five factors explaining 58.72% variance with acceptable CFA fit and reliability.
- Does work stress hurt performance through mental health?
Among 196 Chinese SME employees surveyed in the COVID-19 period, work stress predicted worse mental health and performance; mental health fully mediated the stress–performance link, and servant leadership did not moderate stress.
- Does mindfulness training help police officers manage stress and health?
Tailored mindfulness training significantly reduced mental distress and improved sleep in police officers, although most physiological measures of stress remained unchanged.
- Can Brain and Nerve Stimulation Ease Stress and Improve Sleep?
Both non-invasive brain stimulation and ear-based nerve stimulation can significantly reduce chronic stress and improve sleep quality over time.

Study this conceptflashcards and short-answer questions
What does full mediation change about how a workplace stress finding should be acted on?
It relocates the target. Work stress predicted performance at β = -0.193 and mental health at β = -0.517, and the stress-performance path went non-significant with mental health in the model. That implies interventions are only expected to reach performance if they move mental health. The study is cross-sectional self-report, so the mediation is a statistical pattern consistent with that story rather than a demonstration of it.
Why is a sham-controlled stimulation trial still vulnerable to expectancy?
Because blinding controls the comparison, not the measure. Both tDCS and taVNS beat their shams on stress and sleep quality, which rules out simple placebo-by-attention. But every outcome was a self-report questionnaire, and active stimulation produces sensations sham does not, so participants may partly unblind themselves. An objective measure such as cortisol or actigraphy is what would close the gap.
When does qualitative work add something a stress questionnaire cannot?
When the population's responses are heterogeneous in direction rather than magnitude. Families under the same restrictions reported both severe strain and strengthened bonds. A mean change score would suggest a single moderate effect, describing neither group — and would not have generated the categories a follow-up survey would need to measure.
