Expressive suppression is an emotion regulation strategy where an individual actively hides or inhibits the outward behavioral signs of their emotions, such as masking facial expressions of sadness or anger. Unlike strategies that change how one thinks about a situation, suppression acts on the emotional response after it has already occurred.

Psychologists study expressive suppression because it is a common but psychologically taxing strategy linked to increased stress, lower well-being, and depressive symptoms. Understanding how suppression functions helps researchers and clinicians identify physiological buffers, such as heart rate variability, that might protect individuals from its negative consequences.
