Short answer

In a twenty-cancer screen, traffic-related NOx and road proximity were associated with cervical and brain cancer, with the multiple-comparison caveat stated by the authors.

What happened

Using the Diet, Cancer and Health cohort, Raaschou-Nielsen and colleagues modelled time-weighted residential NOx from 1971 onward and traffic load within 200 m, then estimated incidence rate ratios for twenty non-lung cancers with cancer-specific confounder adjustment. After adjustment, cervical and brain cancers were significantly associated with residential NOx and nearby major streets, with brain cancer nearly doubled near high-traffic streets. Liver cancer associated with nearby traffic but not with NOx. Many smoking-related rate ratios shrank once confounders were controlled. Lung cancer was excluded because it was published separately.

Why it matters

Twenty outcomes with a conventional significance threshold produce about one spurious positive by chance alone before any real effect exists. The study is worth reading precisely because it reports the screen as a screen: the finding is a hypothesis about brain and cervical cancer, not twenty independent tests that happened to yield two.

Before

Traffic pollution and cancer studies typically examined one or a few sites, which left no way to see how the result would look across the full set of outcomes the same data could support.

Now

A full screen gives the context a single-site result lacks, and identifies brain and cervical cancer as the leads worth pursuing. Confounder control shrank many smoking-related associations, cervical results lack HPV data, and the exposure is modelled at the residence.
