Short answer

What happened
Wang, Weber, Zinke, Noack and Born had children learn two lists of word pairs an hour apart, then sleep, stay awake, or take a short pre-sleep test. Sleep beat wakefulness for word-pair retention (Sleep vs Wake t(20.71) = 2.30, d = 0.82) and for list memory expressed relative to encoding. Combined word-pair-plus-list recall did not differ. Slow-wave sleep percentage correlated with that combined measure (r = 0.61). Children stored more unbound pair memory than adults.
Why it matters
A common story is that sleep consolidates episodes by binding items to context. In this child sample, sleep helped the pieces without a detectable boost to the binding itself. That is a developmental qualification, not a refutation of sleep-dependent consolidation.

What it does not showLimitations
The study cannot determine whether sleep actively unbinds word pairs from their context or simply leaves the bond unaffected. Because it used a 1-hour interval between lists to define temporal context, the findings might not apply to other context types, such as spatial location. Additionally, the small sample sizes within each subgroup (such as 17 to 21 children per condition) limit statistical power.

What it does not showLimitations
First, because sleep quality was assessed using self-reported daily diaries rather than objective brain-monitoring equipment, these subjective sleep measures may not perfectly capture actual sleep architecture. Second, the study's correlational nature means we cannot definitively prove that waking up during the night causes accelerated forgetting, only that the two are linked. Lastly, the sample size of 16 participants per group is relatively small, meaning the findings may not represent all older populations.
