Student Engagement
Student engagement is learners’ cognitive, emotional, and behavioral involvement in academic work. In digital and blended settings it is negotiated — shaped by cameras, simulations, teacher training, sudden remote shifts, and mismatched work paces — not a fixed trait of the student.
Engagement is the word schools and platforms use to justify design choices. These studies show when that word points to a usable outcome measure and when it mainly reflects pandemic conditions, self-report, or school-level confounds.

In blended and digital classrooms, engagement is co-produced by teachers and students: mismatched work paces and selective use or avoidance of digital tools can enable or constrain involvement.
Instructional design and teacher preparation for digital shifts can raise reported engagement relative to untrained comparison teachers.
Sudden remote shifts can worsen some engagement and expression supports even when certain representation/access features improve for some students.
Webcam use in synchronous online classes is uneven; engagement relates to both visual and verbal participation and differs across whole-class versus small-group settings.

Some papers treat engagement mainly as an affective/participation survey outcome after an intervention; others treat engagement/disengagement as an ongoing negotiation in classroom practice — different grains of analysis.
Common misconceptions
Requiring cameras on will fix online engagement.
Survey evidence links engagement to multiple participation channels and settings; camera mandates are not shown here as a causal fix for learning.
Blended learning automatically increases engagement.
Blended designs can also produce disengagement when paces and tool use are poorly negotiated.
Exam-style questions

Why is a single-school blended case a weak basis for national policy claims?
It can reveal mechanisms of negotiation and pace mismatch, but it cannot estimate average effects across schools or prove causation.

In a large German university survey, about one-third of students kept cameras off, and engagement related to both visual and verbal participation.
