Concept
Randomized Trials
A randomized trial assigns participants to interventions by chance so that measured effects can be attributed to the treatment rather than selection. Intention-to-treat and usual-care arms are common design features in this library.
RCTs are the clinical evidence students are asked to critique first — allocation, blinding, and outcomes decide whether a therapy claim is trustworthy.
Evidence
What the evidence shows
Drawn from 3 studies in this library. Each claim links to the studies behind it.
Multiple studies in this library examine randomized trials with empirical patient or population outcomes rather than opinion alone.
Of 463 enrolled, rapid-arm patients initiated ART by 90 days far more often (97% vs 72%) and had higher 10-month suppression (64% vs 51%).
At 12 months, frailty prevalence was 14.7 percentage points lower with intervention (NNT ≈ 6.8) and SPPB mobility improved relative to controls; effects were clearer at 12 months than at 3 months.
Intervention villages gained about 19 percentage points in improved sanitation facilities and a smaller (~10%) reduction in open defecation, but child health endpoints did not improve.
Open questions
Where studies disagree
Open questions, not settled findings — worth knowing before you cite any one of these.
Effect sizes and settings differ across randomized trials studies — digital vs clinic, trial vs observational — so results should not be pooled casually.
Common misconceptions
Randomized Trials findings always generalise to every clinic.
These studies are context-bound; designs, populations, and endpoints limit transfer.
Exam-style questions
Short-answer questions that ask you to explain or compare, not recall.
What is Randomized Trials and why do health students study it?

Name one limit of the evidence base for Randomized Trials in this library.
Single-setting trials, observational designs, or digital-only samples limit causal and external claims.
The studies
- Interdisciplinary frailty RCT
A 12-month multifactorial interdisciplinary program reduced frailty prevalence and improved mobility versus usual care in frail older adults in Sydney.
- Did India’s toilet campaign improve child health?
A village-randomized sanitation program raised latrine access and cut open defecation modestly but did not improve child diarrhea, parasites, anemia, or growth.
- Same-day ART start improves HIV outcomes
Rapid ART initiation raised 90-day treatment start and 10-month viral suppression versus standard multi-visit initiation.
