What they did
The article reconstructs Local Government Board reports, clinical textbooks versus 1890s bedside notes, and work on Pfeiffer’s Bacillus influenzae, showing how LGB investigations stitched epidemiology, clinical description, and bacteriology into a specific infectious disease.
What they found
Greenwood’s ‘modern period’ began with 1889–94 pandemics. Isolation was a dream during huge attack rates. Clinicians found nervous and respiratory pictures, not old catarrhal textbook influenza. By the 1900s a bacillus was necessary but not sufficient. The 1918 pandemic was approached with this 1890s–1900s toolkit, even though the agent was later identified as a virus.
