What they did

Authors compared 15 PFASs in Faroese children, women, and whalers, ran PCA/clustering, and modeled NHANES 2005–06 and CHirP predictors such as seafood, carpets, and drinking water.

What they found

Whalers’ profiles were ~80% PFOS and separated on PC1 (51% of variance). Children had higher PFHxS and N-EtFOSAA. Hair mercury correlated with PFHpS, PFDA, PFOS, and PFUnDA (ρ 0.35–0.61). Carpets raised PFHxS 37.2% in NHANES. Seafood tracked PFNA in both US cohorts.

The limits

What it doesn't show

NHANES models explained only 9–25% of PFAS variance. Toxicokinetics and time trends can mimic source differences. CHirP detected only four PFASs in >50% of people.
