A plural diagnosis of historical rickets: statistical clues from seasonality and age incidence, archaeological remains, and treatises (Whistler 1645, Glisson 1650), used both to identify the disease and to probe urban nutrition and environment when child mortality was worsening, especially in London.

Rickets, the 'English disease', alarmed contemporaries by novelty, rise, deformities, and deaths among wealthy children. Medical practitioners did not compile mortality records. In the nineteenth century rickets was a hidden high-incidence disease because it no longer seemed lethal. Ubiquity can make symptoms unremarkable, like today's obesity.
