What they did

Using archives of the Field Distemper Fund, MRC, and Burroughs Wellcome, they reconstruct patronage, Laidlaw and Dunkin’s NIMR work, and why dogs’ constitutions and sociability made them bad standardised laboratory animals.

What they found

Fletcher hoped distemper work might clue human virus diseases even without a strict parallel. Public goodwill rested on dogs as companions from hunting packs to mongrels. Stakeholders demanded unusual engagement plus safety and efficacy. Ferrets became essential experimental animals.
