What they did
A historical reconstruction of field experiments from Kleitman's 1938 Mammoth Cave stay to Mills's 1963 Stump Cross Caverns study, including Arctic work and debates with the Andechs bunker, drawing on published protocols and commentary on zeitgebers and forced desynchrony.
What they found
Caves and polar summer offered isolation from the solar light–dark cycle and social time. Subjects lived 21–22-hour or 27–28-hour days to break 24-hour rhythmicity. Halberg called the Arctic a natural laboratory; later critics preferred controlled bunkers. Even copper-lined Andechs could not fully isolate biological time.

What it doesn't show
This is not a modern circadian RCT and does not locate today's SCN pacemaker. It does not claim caves were better than labs for all questions.
